May 1, 2002 - Tacoma

Review by: Mike D. (not THAT Mike D.)

When my friends and I arrived at the Tacoma Dome, we were suprised that the wait in line was only about 20 minutes long. I was lucky enough to get onto the floor, but my friends got screwed and had to go up in the stands. about half an hour later, the big red curtain came down and Jimmy Eat World was on stage, starting the show off with "A Praise Chorus", which sounds incredible live. They moved their set right along with mostly songs from their self-titled album, including "Bleed American," "If you don't don't," "Authority Song," and "Sweetness." They also included about three older songs. All were very good. They ended their set with "The Middle," which got the entire crowd's attention. All four band members used the same instruments for their entire set. After Jim's closing words, which were something along the lines of "Hey, you guys rule, thanks for hanging out with us," the guys walked off the stage and the red curtain went back up. A very good start to a very good concert.

The dome was now almost packed when two guys came out of the curtain. One was the leader of a major radio station in the Seattle area and claimed that he was hosting the entire show. the other guy just kinda stood their. after they babbled for a little while, the radio station guy said "now give it up for my favorite band, Green Day!" they each left, and the curtain came down, only to reveal several tech people still setting up the stage. the crowd began to Boo, but about 10 minutes later, the lights went out and the Green Day guys walked up on stage and grabbed their instruments. Red lights started flashing and sirens were going off, and the guys launched their set off with "Maria". Billy Joe looked much taller and skinnier than he appears on TV. The band then played a set of mostly older material. Many of their songs were off the Dookie album, including "Welcome to Paradise," "Basket Case," "Longview," "When I Come Around," and "She." Others included "Brain Stew," "Jaded," "King For A Day," and "Hitchen A Ride." During "Jaded," Billy Joe put down his guitar and jumped onto and amp to sing. Moments later, he accidently dropped his microphone and it fell in between the two large amps he had been standing on. Very pissed off, he jumped down and started yelling at his tech people for another mic. He eventually got one, and with some struggle trying to turn it on, finished up the song. A highlight of the show was when three crowd members were called on stage to take over the bands instruments and play a new song. the guys were also joined by a Mariarchi band and some guy in a bubble bee suit. Billy Joe knows how to work the crowd, which made the band's set very interesting. He would yell at people who were fighting in the pit, and even whipped out a giant Supersoaker and drenched everyone close to the stage, including the security guards. As the end of their set drew near, the guys played two songs from their album Warning - "Minority" and "Waiting." After these, they seemed to have a lot of fun destroying their equipment. Bassist Mike Dirnt dipped his green Fender P-Bass in a bucket of gasoline and lit it on fire, then carried it around like a giant tourch before smashing it into a million flaming pieces on the stage. Drummer Tre Cool fell forward over his drum set, then took his time in smashing each drum on the stage. After all this madness was over, the lights dimmed and Billy Joe appeared once again on stage with a guitar and played an amazing solo, electrified version of "Time of your life," which was one of the main highlights of the entire evening. Green Day put on a great show.

Half an hour later, the lights went off in the Dome again and the red curtain came down once more to reveal Mark, Tom and Travis of blink-182. They launched their set with "Anthem Part 2." They then continued their set of 20 songs with newer songs such as "The Rock Show," "First Date," "Happy Holidays" (twice, i dont really know why), "Please Take Me Home," "Stay Together For The Kids," and "Reckless Abandon." In between songs, the guys didnt seemed quite as immature as they sound on their live album. Mark stopped the show to inform everyone of a sleezy T-shirt salesman who had been stealing donations for an Anti-Racism group (or something like that) out by the food stands, and suggested that everyone go buy a shirt and tell the guy to fuck off. After this touching little speech, the guys went into some Enema material such as "Adam's Song," during which Mark altered the lyrics to say "Please tell mom this is all her fault." Others included "Don't Leave Me," "What's My Age Again," "All The Small Things," "Dysentary Gary" and "Dumpweed."

Their stage setup was by far the best of the three bands, which consisted of dozen of firey explosions and many more lights. The highlights of the show included Tom's solo acoustic version of the song "What Went Wrong," and Travis's unbelievable drum stunt.

***PLEASE STOP READING IF YOU DONT WANT THIS TO BE SPOILED FOR YOU!!!***His entire drum platform lifted off the stage about 20 or so feet, moved forward right above the pit, did 3 forward flips and 3 backward flips, all while Travis pounded out an amazing drum solo. The platform then stayed in it's position as the guys went into one of their final songs, "Dammit," during which the drum platform exploded with dozens of fireworks. Sparks rained down and the pit went crazy. Blink's show did impress me. I don't know if it was quite as energetic as Green Day's but hey, Green Day has been doing this for twice as long as Blink has. The show ended with Tom crawling around gathering his applause, and finally collapsing on stage. The tech people had to bring a stretcher out and carry him off on it. Mark used his pink Fender for most of the show, and a tan Fender for a couple songs. Tom used about five different guitars, black, white, yellow, and a couple others. Again, the poor sound system in the Dome did take away from the overall quatlity of the show, but the Pop Disaster tour is definately a must-see show, and I encourage anyone to go. It was incredible.
